New York Times: U.N. Security Council Approves Resolution on Syria Talks

UNITED NATIONS — The United Nations Security Council unanimously approved on Friday a resolution calling for a cease-fire and political talks to help end the civil war in Syria.

The measure, adopted 15-0, is the first time that Russia and the United States, who have been at loggerheads over the future of Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, agreed on a road map for a political process.

The resolution makes no mention of whether or not Mr. Assad would be able to run for office in new elections, which it says must be held in the next 18 months.

USA Today: U.N. Security Council to meet on Syria's civil war

Delegates from across the world gathered in New York on Friday to discuss a solution to Syria's civil war.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is hosting a meeting of envoys from 20 countries in the International Syria Support Group to seek a cease-fire and the start of negotiations for peace talks between forces loyal to the Syrian government and rebels, ideally by Jan. 1.

The meeting is also seeking ways to intensify the fight against the Islamic State, which holds large swaths of the country and has greatly exacerbated the 4-year-old civil war that has left 250,000 dead and caused millions of Syrians to flee, intensifying an ongoing migrant crisis in Europe.

Reuters: U.N. Security Council puts sanctions focus on Islamic State

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The U.N. Security Council warned on Thursday that some countries are failing to implement long-standing sanctions against Islamic State, as an unprecedented meeting of finance ministers put the global focus on cutting off the militant group's funds.

The 15-member council unanimously adopted a U.S.- and Russian-drafted resolution that ties together existing measures targeting Islamic State's finances and offers guidance on implementation in a bid to push more countries to act.

Reuters: Yemen peace talks struggling in Switzerland amid disputes: sources

U.N.-sponsored Yemeni peace talks in Switzerland appeared to be struggling amid differences over government demands for the release of senior officials held by the Iran-allied Houthis, sources close to the talks said on Thursday.

The dispute comes amid fresh fighting between the Houthis and forces loyal to the Saudi-backed President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi in which at least 15 people were killed from both sides, according to tribal and medical sources.

Peace talks began on Tuesday away from television cameras in Switzerland to try to end nearly nine months of fighting that has killed almost 6,000 people and displaced millions.

Reuters: Fed raises interest rates, citing ongoing U.S. recovery

The Federal Reserve hiked interest rates for the first time in nearly a decade on Wednesday, signaling faith that the U.S. economy had largely overcome the wounds of the 2007-2009 financial crisis.

The U.S. central bank's policy-setting committee raised the range of its benchmark interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to between 0.25 percent and 0.50 percent, ending a lengthy debate about whether the economy was strong enough to withstand higher borrowing costs.
